about

"The concept for the All Golden began when I found my old Tascam cassette portastudio and a bunch of tapes that I'd made between the ages of about 16-20. I was surprised by how much I liked what I'd done (embarrassing teenage lyrics aside). Some had ended up as Kenickie songs, or solo stuff later on. A lot weren't finished, and in some cases there were multiple versions of the same song, either different musical approaches, words, or performance.

I tried to remember what I was like at 20. What would have been floating round my head. I was far enough away from the source material to do something interesting with it. I decided to finish what I started; a collaboration with 20 year old me, 40 year old me covering my own songs, essentially.

I'm interested in the idea of the 'text' in music- that there's a definitive performance of a song, rather than it being an endlessly mutable thing. I wanted to challenge that, and having multiple versions of the same song is useful. Each side of the EP is the same song but different performances. Some minor, some couldn't be less alike.

I tried to keep to the limits I had when recording the first time, using the same 4 track tape machine. I tired to remember being 20, thinking Apples In Stereo or Pavement or Superchunk were the greatest bands in the world, and doing my take on them. I tried to get into what I thought younger me wanted out of each moment or lyric, or remembering the reasons why I was recording these songs. I tried. Sometimes it worked."
